The Problem
This WooCommerce store had grown to over 2,000 products across dozens of categories. The product catalog pages were painfully slow — averaging 6.2 seconds on mobile. Google Search Console flagged Core Web Vitals issues, and their analytics showed a 73% bounce rate on mobile. They estimated losing thousands in monthly revenue to slow pages driving away shoppers before they could even browse products.
Our Approach
We started with a full diagnostic: Lighthouse audits, WebPageTest waterfalls, and MySQL slow-query profiling. The root causes were unoptimized product images (averaging 800KB each), no object caching, 14 render-blocking scripts from plugins, and unindexed database queries on product filtering. We implemented ShortPixel for automatic WebP/AVIF conversion, configured Redis object caching, eliminated render-blocking resources through selective defer/async loading, added proper database indexes for WooCommerce product queries, and set up Cloudflare with page rules optimized for e-commerce.
The Results
PageSpeed jumped from 34 to 94. Mobile load time dropped from 6.2s to 1.1s. The bounce rate fell from 73% to 41% within the first month. The store owner reported a 28% increase in mobile conversions and a noticeable improvement in organic search rankings.
“Our mobile sales increased by 28% in the first month after optimization. Pages that used to crawl now load instantly. Our customers actually enjoy browsing on their phones now.”
